- Our History & Us -

Inspired by the historic restoration and preservation work of his father and grandfather  Timothy Smith started his antique restoration and appraisal business in Mclean Virginia in 1980. “Grandad Clarence set the benchmark for the family with the construction of the Jefferson Memorial in 1939. He went on to oversee many other important building and restoration projects in the Washington DC area, including the renovation of the old Senate Chambers in the US Capitol and the construction of the National Museum of Art. Dad of course worked for Grandad as a young carpenter but picked up the mantle when Clarence retired. His own first important project was the conversion of the old caretaker’s home at the Naval Observatory into the official residence of the Vice President. By the early 1970’s he was almost entirely engaged in the construction and renovation of premier homes in Northern Virginia. Like all of my five brothers, I started working for Dad’s company (E. Jay Smith Builders) part-time in my early teens. Eventually, I was apprenticed to the company cabinet maker and antique furniture restorer. Home from college in the late 70’s I picked up my own restoration projects. I made more money in three weeks than I did working for the family business all summer. But more importantly, I was hooked on the thrill of bringing a damaged or neglected object back to life.”
